“The African community in Philadelphia faces the highest imprisonment and poverty rates in the U.S., and we recognize that these conditions are imposed by the U.S. government and carried out daily by the Nutter administration,” says African People’s Socialist Party Northeast Regional Outreach Director Ajamu Bandele.

Alison Hoehne, Chair of the African People’s Solidarity Committee in Philadelphia says,

“We are calling for action and for the white community to speak out against the escalation of attacks against the black community in Philadelphia and around the country.   We believe the real violence, and the real crime is the brutal conditions imposed by the City government on black and Puerto Rican communities including:

            • Police murders of 22 people in 2006 alone – no police have been prosecuted

            • 50% of black men in Philadelphia are unemployed

            • Students in Philadelphia schools were under-funded by $4972 per student in 2006, while Lower Merion students were over-funded by $5146

            • Only18% of Philadelphians have college degrees, and up to 50% of those in city jails were unemployed when arrested

            • Over 40% of Philadelphians live below the poverty level
