On June 9 Senator Benigno Aquino III (“Noynoy” Aquino) of the Liberal Party, the son of former President Cory Aqunio, was proclaimed president by the Philippines Congress. Noynoy was a former senator “with little legislative record to speak of”, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper, which nevertheless campaigned hard for Noynoy Aquino’s presidency, soon after Cory Aquino’s death in August 2009.

Paradoxically, with the restoration of the Aquinos to the presidency, the elections have also resulted in the restoration of the Marcoses to national politics, with the former dictator’s son Bongbong Marcos being elected to the Senate, Imelda Marcos winning a seat in Congress and her daughter Imee Marcos winning the governorship of their political bailiwick, the province of Ilocos Norte.

Almost 25 years after the fall of the Marcos dictatorship and the installation of Cory Aquino’s “revolutionary government” in 1986, what does the Noynoy presidency mean for Philippines politics?

MANILA, Philippines—Some 100 non-government organizations from all over the country under the umbrella network of Kampanya para sa Makataong Pamumuhay (KAMP or Dignified Life for All Campaign) are asking incoming President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to adopt their pro-poor agenda.

The agenda, which will be presented to the public and key legislators and possible Cabinet secretaries on Tuesday, June 22, in Sulo Hotel, seeks to prioritize people's rights to work, food, and essential services like housing and health.

“The start of this administration is filled with hope. We hope that President Aquino will focus all his energy at the alleviation of poverty and inequality,” said Ana Maria Nemenzo in a news release to media outfits.

With just over five months to go, this year’s national elections are already throwing the twists, experts, pundits, and pollsters predicted were going to happen, some added twists. The long overdue anti-government mood is yielding fruits for those tapping into it. The benefits are going to Republicans in places, like Hawaii’s special election between the two Democrats and the one Republican and the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Of course, in the former, even in a bad year for Republicans the Republicans should have the edge, and they are expected to.

Yet, the pitchforks and torches have not always yielded what everyone expected.  In Pennsylvania, during a year even most Democrats are supposed to be going Republican, a former Republican lost the Democratic primary to a more traditional Democrat.  In the recent special election in Pennsylvania between just one Democrat and one Republican the Republican lost quite surprisingly.

The bitter enemies of the late President Ferdinand Marcos are now the political allies of his son, Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is running for a senator under the Nacionalista Party.

Marcos, 53, yesterday said he will campaign for his fellow NP senatorial candidates, militant party-list Rep. Satur Ocampo of Bayan Muna and Gabriela Women's Party-list Rep. Liza Maza, in the Ilocos region, which used to be described as the “Solid North”, a bailiwick of the Marcoses.

The younger Marcos is the son and namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who jailed Ocampo and other political activists, including the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. during Martial Law.

“We will be carrying every candidate of NP because I am part of the ticket. If I will not do it, then I should run under the NP, Marcos said, in a press conference in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

Akbayan party-list launches campaign to deny the premier political family power in the 2010 elections

"Blood is thicker than water." This is the statement issued today by Akbayan party-list during the launch of the "Deny the Five Campaign, a drive to stop five members of the Arroyo family including Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) from winning legislative seats in the May 2010 elections.

Blood Politics

In a press conference in Quezon City, Akbayan said the campaign aims to repel Mrs. Arroyo and her family's intent of securing their interests in congress by populating the government body with clan members together with its cabal of trapo loyalists. The group said GMA plans to command an alternative power center from congress by exercising patronage and blood politics.

MANILA, Philippines—The rumored “hidden candidate” of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) got a boost Tuesday from Malacañang.

Gary Olivar, Ms Arroyo’s deputy spokesperson, heaped praise on Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party for purportedly shunning a “negative campaigning style.”

This is the reason Villar is now closing in on the survey front-runner, Sen. Benigno Aquino III of the Liberal Party, Olivar said.

According to Olivar, the rumor that the administration is actually backing Villar and not its standard-bearer, Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD, is “preposterous.”

“I think the reason some people say that is because he (Villar) has not been running his campaign purely on the basis of attacking the President—which I can’t say, unfortunately, of the other opposition candidates,” Olivar said, adding:
