NINE POLITICAL ACTIVISTS ORDERED BY THE FBI TO APPEAR BEFORE A GRAND JURY
ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, PLAN TO REFUSE TO COOPERATE.

Come to a PRESS CONFERENCE
on TUESDAY, JANUARY 25TH, 4:30-5:30PM
at Calvary Church, 801 South 48th Street, Philadelphia 19143

National Day of Action to Protest FBI and Grand Jury Repression

In December 2010, the FBI delivered nine new subpoenas to anti-war and
solidarity activists in Chicago. Since September the state has served 23
subpoenas. The newest subpoenas order the nine people to appear at a grand
jury in Chicago on January 25th.

All subpoenaed activists have so far refused to cooperate with the grand
jury's probe.

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression is calling for solidarity events in
every city on that date.

The Philadelphia press conference will take place just prior to an
important meeting being organized in Philadelphia to "STOP FBI ENTRAPMENT
OF MUSLIMS."

The speakers who are on the evening panel have agreed to come early and
speak at the press conference. They include:

Steve Downs - Retired New York State attorney and a founder of Project
Salam, which believes many innocent Muslims have been targeted, prosecuted
& convicted since 9/11;

Dominick Calsolaro - Member of Albany, NY City Council that passed a
Resolution in Support of Justice for Muslims Targeted by Preemptive
Prosecution;

Laila Yaghi - Mother of Ziyad Yaghi, North Carolina resident arrested by
FBI after visiting Jordan in 2006.

Burim Duka - Brother of three of the Ft Dix 5, unjustly convicted and
imprisoned, now in Supermax prisons;

In addition, local speakers include:

Bob Smith - Brandywine Peace Community

Mary Catherine Roper - Aclu-pa

Betsey Piette - Philadelphia International Action Center

Nathaniel Miller - Philly BDS

Jim Kennedy - state assembly candidate for the Green Party

John Kirkland - PAW (Philly Against War)

and others.

Endorsers of the 7pm event include: ACLU-Pennsylvania; Brandywine Peace
Community; Council on American-Islamic Relations, Pennsylvania (CAIR-PA);

Decisions...

I see that Norman Finkelstain is speaking at UPenn tonight and it's a shame that there are two compelling and related events scheduled for the same evening. I wish that I could attend both of them, this event is extremely imporant but I have always wanted to hear Finkelstein too. I suppose it's better than having no choice at all, right?

Finkelstein is talking specifically about Gaza but given his own history with political repression, stated support for the activists being targeted and the fact that the attacks on Palestinians and Palestine solidarity activists are intertwined I would assume, and hope, that he will frame the discussion appropriately.

I'll show up at the press conference but will probably head to UPenn after that, at least that way I can offer some support to both. Has there been any outreach to the students about the press conference? This is the first that I heard about the press conference.
